Grilled cheese sandwiches are great, but once you’ve had one, you’ve had them all, right? No way! Grilled cheese sandwiches are actually extremely varied, containing different types of bread, different cheeses, and even additions such as pimentos, herbs, sauces, and other flavorings. The trick is to make sure the cheese to other ingredients ratio is right. If it’s mostly meat with some cheese, it’s not a grilled cheese. If it’s mostly cheese you taste, with the other ingredients enhancing the cheese flavor, it’s a grilled cheese!
Here is a list of the top 10 grilled cheese sandwich recipes that are unique, delicious, and totally NOT your average grilled cheese! Check out these grilled cheese recipes below.

This grilled cheese sandwich is even more rich and creamy because of the addition of bacon and avocado. This sandwich is absolutely delicious, but be warned that this is definitely NOT a healthy sandwich. Every ingredient used is high in both fat and calories. But how incredibly delicious does it look? OMG!

You could use one of the mac and cheese recipes we list in our 15 mac and cheese recipes post, or your own favorite recipe. And add some extra cheese before you grill the sandwich!

Like mac and cheese, lasagna is one of those ultimate comfort foods that nearly everyone seems to love. (We have a post with some fantastic lasagna recipes here.) Absolutely incredible!

I can’t even describe how unbelievable, incredibly, out-of-this-world delicious this sandwich is. You really must try it to believe it! It combines mascarpone cheese, herbs, roasted garlic, provolone, mozzarella, parmesan and thick, firm bread to make a sandwich you just literally can’t even…
Seriously. I literally can’t even…
8. Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese

Alright, this one is pushing the border between sandwich and grilled cheese a bit. But it’s so darned good I just had to include it. This recipe is spicy, but you can make it as mild or wild as you want, because you add the wing sauce yourself. It’s also mitigated a bit by the ranch dressing. You just have to try this, especially if you love buffalo wings!
9. Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese

This is another that almost pushes the envelope between sandwich and grilled cheese, BUT, if you have that cheese to filling ratio just right, it’s definitely still a grilled cheese! Plus, Sloppy Joe is one of the most heavenly delicious things ever invented. This is one of those sandwiches you can make for your kids and tell everyone it’s because they love it so much… but secretly you make a few extra because you want to scarf them all and say, “Hey, I didn’t want all that food to go to waste!”
10. Grilled Pimento Cheese Sandwich

When I was a kid growing up in Georgia, one of my favorite quick lunches was a pimento cheese sandwich. I’ve just always loved them. Pimento cheese is a southern favorite that never seems to go out of style. But for some reason, I never thought of actually grilling one… until now! This recipe actually uses a homemade pimento cheese recipe, and it’s so good you’ll want to lick the plate if any of the filling manages to fall out. And come on, it’s grilled cheese. It’s gonna happen.
